II. Reading
Christmas
Christmas is the main
public holiday in Great Britain, a Christian festival to
remember the birth of
Jesus Christ.
In churches people
sing Christmas songs, Christmas carols. Sometimes groups
of people walk about
the streets and sing carols at the doors of the houses. One of
the well-known carols
is “Silent Night”.
Young children are
told that Santa Claus will bring them presents if they are
good. Before going to
bed on Christmas Eve the children hang stockings at the
back of their beds,
for Santa Claus to put presents in when he comes in the middle
of the night through
the chimney.
On Christmas Eve (the
24th of December) some people go to a special church
service called
Midnight Mass which starts at 12 o’clock at night.
Christmas is the day
when people stay at home, open their presents and eat
together. The most
important meal is Christmas dinner: turkey with potatoes and
other vegetables,
followed by a Christmas pudding. Other traditional foods include
a special Christmas
cake and mince pies - small round cakes filled with
a mixture of apples,
raisins and spices.
The day after
Christmas, the 26th of December, is also a public holiday. It’s
called Boxing Day. The
name goes back to the old tradition: some time before
Christmas, boxes were
placed in churches for the people to put some money or
presents for the poor.
On the day after Christmas, the 26th of December, the priest
opened the box and
gave the contents away to poor people.

Jingle Bells
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Dashing thro’ the snow,
In a one-horse open sleigh,
O’er the fields we go,
Laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight. Oh!
(Repeat the first verse)
VI. Listening
1. Listen to the text, then read the text, find 6 mistakes in it and
correct them.
Not all English people celebrate the New Year. Those who do, celebrate it
on
the 31st of December in one way or another.
Some have a New Y ear
party. A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the
Christmas tree.
Another way of celebrating the New Y ear is to go to a New Y ear’s
dance. Some people
stay at home and watch the celebration of the New Y ear on
television.
There is another
interesting New Y ear tradition in the North of England and
Scotland (America) It
is an old custom of First-Footing. In Great Britain the first
visitor who comes into
a house on New Y ear’s morning (evening) is called the First
Foot. This visitor is
very, very important. The English people believe that the First
Foot brings luck to
the family for the following twelve months.
The First Foot comes
very early (late) and the sooner he comes, the better. He
brings some symbolic
presents of good - usually a piece of bread (2 pieces of
bread), a piece of
coal, a coin. That means that the family will have good luck, will
be happy and rich in
the coming year.
The First Foot also
brings an evergreen branch as a promise of continuing life.
To be a true
luck-bringer, the First Foot, must be healthy, young and good-looking.
He must have black
hair or fair hair, but not red hair (he must have red hair).
In England the First
Foot must be a man or a boy, not a woman (woman).
1) Do all English people celebrate the New Y
ear?
2) When do they celebrate the New Y ear?
3) How do they celebrate it?
4) What interesting New Y ear tradition is there
in the North of England and
Scotland?
5) Do you know any other traditions and customs
of other countries and people?
What are they?
VII. Speaking

Christmas and New Y ear in GB (I gr.) and in Ukraine (II gr.)
